We have been reaching out to organizations that support facilities, maintenance and risk management professionals to determine what educational, networking and certification programs are available. We are grateful that representatives from BOMI, the Building Owners and Managers Institute International, which serves as an independent institute for property and facility management education. They discussed three programs that may be of interest to our LFMC membership - Facilities Management Certificate (FMC), Facilities Management Administrator (FMA) and Building Systems Maintenance Certificate (SMC).
LFMC: Could you briefly explain the FMC certification - what are the topics covered and the goal of the certification process that a facilities professional can expect from going through the training?
BOMI: See attached FMC Sol Sheet, excerpt here:
The Facilities Management Certificate (FMC) Program provides you with information that is critical to successfully managing the ongoing operation and maintenance of building systems. Upon successful completion of the FMC Program, you will understand how to:
LFMC: What is the total cost of the program?
BOMI: All courses can be taken 3 ways.
1) Self-study format - $635 per course ($1905 total).
2) Instructor led Online format, available 3 time per year, 15 weeks long, 24/7 accessibility, not a webinar. $1435 per course ($4305 total cost)
3) Accelerated/classroom - $1295 per course ($3885 total cost). These classes are 3 consecutive days, your choice as per scheduling. All pricing above include, book, exam and instructor fees.
In speaking with BOMI representatives further regarding option 3 (accelerated/classroom) to get a local class we would need to put a group of 10-12 together, they may be able to work a group discount if we had a group of 15 or more.
LFMC: Is the program self-directed and/or interactive? How long does it typically take to complete the course and receive certification?
BOMI: From time of registration there is a 6 month time frame to study and take the exam. Self- study is just that, no other help is provided. Usually, certificate programs can be completed in a calendar year.
LFMC: Is there a next level to this certification program or do you have partnerships with other organizations for ongoing education?
BOMI: YES! The FMC leads into the FMA designation, the three course once completed for the FMC carry over to the 8 needed for the FMA, leaving only 5 more to complete to get the FMA designation.
LFMC: Is there a continuing education requirement with this certificate?
BOMI: NO, only our designations require CPD credits, which are optional.
LFMC: Do you have a local rep in the Eugene, Oregon area?
BOMI: BOMI is a not for profit education provider, I think there was/is a local BOMA in Portland. All BOMA’s around the country are an association that require dues we don’t. They also set their own pricing, they re-sell our courses to fit their needs.
We will continue to reach out to organization that offer education and certification resources for facilities, maintenance and risk professionals. To read more about the BOMI FMC program check out their website HERE. As discussed with other programs such as the Building Operators Certification (BOC) in our previous article (HERE), if we put a group together we may have the option to host locally as well as benefit from a LFMC group discount.
